Not Fate. Portion.
Here is the part that most people get wrong about the Moirai, and the part that matters most.
The Moirai are usually translated as "the Fates." That makes them sound grim. Inevitable. Doom. The idea that your life is already written and you are just walking a predetermined path, carrying your fate like a stone.
But that is not what the word moira meant.
Moira meant "portion." "Share." "Allotment." Your moira was your fair share of the harvest. Your portion of the land. Your lot in life. And the ancient Greeks understood something subtle and beautiful about this: your portion is given to you, but what you do with your portion is your own.
Homer describes moira as fate that "follows your steps and directs the consequences of your actions." She does not write the story. She gives you the thread. You weave it.
In the Odyssey, even Odysseus, the cleverest of heroes, had to live out his moira. But he also chose how to live it. He raged against the suitors. He loved his wife. He sailed home despite the gods. His moira was the journey. His choices were his own.
The ancient Greek understanding was this: you are given a portion. A share. A thread of a certain length and quality. The stars, the circumstances of your birth, the family you were born into, the era you live in, the gifts and challenges you carry. All of that is your moira. Your allotment. What no one can take from you and what no one can change.
But what you do with that portion? That is yours. The thread is given. The weaving is yours.
